Why have I become an artist working with flat surface, not the sculpture?

The first time I had seen many reproductions in the frames
from the collections of Tretiakov gallery and Russian Museum,
when I started going to school - those reproductions were hanging on the walls.
The beauty of painting struck me when I was 7 years old.
Before that I had only seen tiny pictures in books.

Then my father took me to the State gallery to see the original paintings of masters.
I entered some enchanted, spiritually different world - so not similar to our casual one.
I was amazed and mesmerized by paintings showing nature, still life, especially portraits.
They looked as if they were alive! As if there was blood under the skin.
And still lives – I even looked behind frames to check if it was not deception
and there was a niche in the wall with real objects.
But they were paintings!
That all touched my heart and soul.
How can it be?
People are like alive, I saw them as real ones,
but I could not touch them with hands as physical objects.
The mystery of this enchanted me.
Canvas was flat, 2-dimensional and inside it there was a 3D world which looked like reality.
I dreamt to learn to do this magic.

In the sculpture everything was clear - what is made from wood, stone or bronze.
And their eyes were like blind (without pupils).
I saw sculpture as dead, soulless, too obviously created.
That is why there was no mystery in it.
And in painting - it is like a person from a parallel but still real world -
looking at you in silence not wanting to talk.
The power of this strikes and enchants.
That is why I am not a sculpturer.
Leonardo da Vinci proved my words that painting is the queen of all arts!
