Born in Moscow to the family
of a famous Animalist-sculptor Andrey Marts and critic Lyudmila Marts.
In 1982 graduated from Moscow Polygraph Institute, department of art.
My teachers were D. Lion, D. Zhilinsky and A. Vasnetsov.
Member of Artists’ Union since 1986.
Laureate of the Viktor Popkov Award in 2005.
Coresponding member of Russian Art Academy since 2012.
Works are in collections in Russia and abroad.

 

 

Since childhood I have been painting and modelling.
Thinking about the university,
I decided to enter the sculpture department.
Everything was fine but there were problem with the color
and I was advised to try painting for general knowledge.
And suddenly I realized that this was mine.
In sculpture the authority of my father was too strong and I followed him,
in painting I found the interest which fully took over me.
Art is the way of understanding the world,
not self-expression or transferring the beauty,
but exploration.
Toil demanding honesty and courage.

 

 

I always go from nature,
from bright emotion and visual impression
but I seldom paint from nature,
I try to find the sign, to generalize what I see
and to understand visually concentrated meaning.
I always learn from my favorite Artists.
With years the list of favorites changes,
but it is a necessary part of the job.

 


 

 I think that there are plenty of wonderful Artists.
Unfortunately, there is a division into “actual” and “traditional” art,
and the first is considered contemporary and the second –
out of date.
I believe it is wrong.
