“It is difficult to tell about one’s life.
From my childhood, I remember reproductions on the wall -
“Alyonushka”, “Three bogatyrs” and Levitan’s landscape.
Each day I looked at them, and now I think that they formed my ideal of an Artist.

My mother was a simple worker of the railway and took me to Moscow to Tretyakov Galley.
It was the shock and the feelings from those great paintings remained in my heart forever.
When I studied in Saint-Petersburg Art Academy named after I. Repin,
there were many new discoveries due to the Hermitage and Russian museum.
Botticelli, Rembrandt, Murillo, etc. -
what great painters they were and what great art they created !

It was because of either genes, or those first impressions from childhood,
but I had always known that I would return home.
I lived in Saint-Petersburg for 10 years; knew many famous painters,
many of them left to other countries in search for the recognition.
And I returned home and have been looking for contemporary Russian bogatyrs since then.

I hope that not all of them died and disappeared in vast deserted places.
I travel a lot in Russia and still wonder at the power of our ancestors
who could without modern technology build such enormous temples, monasteries and bell towers.
The feeling of harmony, measure, taste and beauty of our ancestors astonishes.
I admire ancient icons, frames, window frames of old village log houses,
old clothing, embroideries of towels and shirts and many other things.
This all could have been created by really strong people with the sense of beauty.
May be I will never see bogatyrs in real life, but this dream is so appealing and calling.

I think that an artist in Russia is doomed to be a philosopher.
Only one long autumn in deserted distances with lonely trails and cries
of migrating birds can make one think about the meaning of life.

I think that I have the right to be called the Russian Artist
because I have a few works in my workshop
which I would not be ashamed to show at an exhibition of any level.

And as it is spring and very soon elderly women will start selling mayflowers at the market
and happy time of flowers is coming when one wants to paint them till late autumn,
admiring their short time beauty and trying to make these feeling eternal on the canvas.”
